Windows XP has reached “end-of-support” status as of April 8th 2014

If you continue to use WindowsXP after the support date ends, your computer will still work, but will become more vulnerable to security risks and viruses.

Also, as more software and hardware manufacturers continue to develop for newer versions of Windows (Like Windows7 and Windows8), you can expect to encounter greater numbers of apps and devices that do not work with WindowsXP anymore.

What does this mean to me??

It means you should take action. After April 8, 2014, there will be no new security updates, no hotfixes, no free support, no paid support, and reduced online technical content updates for WindowsXP. Running Windows XP and Office 2003 in your environment after the ‘end of support’ date may also expose you to potential risks of data loss, virus infection, or a security breach, and over time- will put you out of compliance with PCI-DSS and HIPAA regulations.

What are my choices??

First, You must determine if all of your computers are running WindowsXP, whether the practice management software or the main software in your office is up-to-date, or will run on a newer Operating System. By now, all major software manufacturers have updated their software to run on Windows7 and/or Windows8. So, if you’ve fallen behind in updating, it may be time to renew your software support contract or install an office-wide update to be ready for the change.

Second, if some or any of your computers are running on a newer Operating System like Windows Vista or Windows7, or Windows8 in a mixed environment, then it is likely that you are up to date with your main software and only need to replace those remaining WindowsXP computers. However, since every environment is different please contact Hometech to help you determine your software requirements. We are happy to help!

Third, ask yourself: Should I upgrade my WindowsXP computer to Windows7 or should I buy another PC? In most cases we would advise buying a new-or even a refurbished PC. Why? A Windows7 upgrade license will cost $149, plus the labor, plus any hardware upgrades needed to make that PC run well.  This may end up costing you more money and time than to buy a replacement tower. This may seem like a big expense but the good news is that Windows7 has already been out for a few years and there are many deals on new and refurbished computers ranging from just $299 to $879 depending on your budget.

If you decide to replace your PC’s, HometechIT has put together a pricing guide below to make it easy for you.  These are computers that we have found through our distributors that will work in most offices and even a dental environment where requirements are more precise. Please contact us to help you outfit your office with the proper PC and make the migration of your programs and information to the new computers as painless as possible.
